MILLENNIUM TOWN PARK CAFE

Description: Café & Utility Building, Millennium Town Park
Completed: 2011 (in part)
Challenges: Riva Architects were awarded this prestigious project after winning a limited design competition. Both buildings had to be designed to complement the concepts behind the Park itself – one was to be a landmark feature and the other a building to blend in. The Café sought to combine the qualities of structural glazing with laser cut calibrated granite work. In spite of receiving in-principal planning consent it was felt that politically the need for a café was not necessary. The Utility Building then became the centre of attention. It had to be environmentally responsible – a roof design system was evolved which holistically maximised natural light and ventilation to the public toilet areas while providing a housing for photovoltaic panels. The building pioneered Jersey’s first Changing Places toilet facility. The whole building acts as a ‘wildlife arc’, incorporating both bat and bird boxes. Indeed, the eaves were specifically designed to allow swallows and house martins to nest.
