Detailed historic research was carried out about the site to seek an architectural idiom which was rooted in the local industrial history of the site. Although no listed buildings existed, the decision was taken to retain elements of existing structures which were remnants of this industrial heritage. The massing of this large development was tailored to be both contextual and respectful of adjoining properties, many of which are protected as part of the Victorian vernacular of Jersey. The building blocks were sensitively arranged around semi-private spaces / courtyards, which imbue the development with a unique character, creating micro parks for the new community. A pioneering public engagement process was followed to inform the local community of the true nature of the proposals. The outline planning consent was finally gained at Appeal and is viewed as a significant success and achievement for the Practice.
