The then Transport and Technical Services Department (TTS) wished the development to showcase the best principles of sustainability. The Centre also had to adapt the principles of Resource Efficiency. A significant percentage of the building incorporates materials re-purposed from the demolition of the Jersey Potteries development. Indeed, the salvaged steel portal frames from the Gorey development established the profile of the Centre.

Looking to the future, the design paradigm set by Sir Alex Gordon in 1974 ‘Long life, low energy, loose fit’ was applied to ensure the adaptability of the building.
