LA FONTAINE
This project has seen the replacement of a poor quality cluster of 3 dwellings, garages and stores with a rationalised 1 No 3 bedroom dwelling and 1 No 2 bedroom self-catering unit with enhanced landscaping. The development has successfully made the best use of the coastal edge setting, while still respecting the historic scale and development grain of the La Pulente area.
The traditional scale and form of the replacement structures are in keeping with the quality and traditional vernacular of this coastal site. The pair of humble seafront ‘boat house’ style properties create a repetition of west facing gables which look onto St Ouen’s Bay, with the structures extending perpendicular to the road edge and coast to emphasise and reinforce the traditional design pattern appropriate to the setting.
While referencing the traditional house forms, character and materials, the pair of structures interpret this architectural idiom in a modern manner. Not only do the buildings successfully improve the quality of the specific site, but they also contribute significantly to the visual uplift of the whole La Pulente area.
The architecture of each building is drawn from a common design family with good quality, natural materials carefully selected to emulate the maritime character of this coastal setting.
The simple forms of the structures are inherently appropriate to this heavily exposed coastal location, derivative of the character of traditional fisherman’s cottages.
The building detailing responds carefully to the extreme coastal rating of the site with suppressed eaves heights, clipped verges, high performance but not excessive glazed openings and robust detailing.
