80-PERSON RESTAURANT AND AN AL FRESCO EATING AREA

The height of this very successful restaurant has been severely restricted by a restrictive covenant which exists across the site. While this factor determined the form of the building, the close proximity to the beach and the potential damage caused by spring tides and large swells influenced the material selection of the building exterior. The feature retractable glazed lantern was imported from a Canadian firm specialising in such features for cruise liners. The approach to the restaurant is made through a sunken reception courtyard, designed to address the possible effects of rising sea levels. The restaurant is topped by a sedum ‘green’ roof which has been hydro-sown with a mix of plants specifically selected for the coast. The interiors were also designed by Riva Architects.
